Radio XLV, side B, track 10: “Bust A Move” by Young MC

Young MC - Bust A MoveOh, Young MC, this is one of those songs that defines one’s life.  There was life before hearing “Bust A Move”, and then there was life after hearing “Bust A Move”.  And obviously, life after hearing “Bust A Move” was much better.  This was one of those songs that, after you heard it for the first time on the radio, you talked about it with your friends the next day at school.  I guarantee you that if we went back in time and quietly observed my school bus and my high school’s halls, you would have heard snippets from this song, like “Ya ate so much ya nearly split ya pants” and “She’s dressed in yellow, she says hello, come sit next ta me ya fine fellow” as well as knowing laughter because we all had either been in some similar situation or else we desperately WANTED to be in some similar situation.

I guarantee you that I fantasized about that girl in yellow many a time, Young MC.  I didn’t really think about it until just now, but after I got my driver’s license, I drove to the movies by myself many a time, and I’m pretty sure that subconsciously there was always that hope that I’d find my own girl dressed in yellow who would ask me to come over and bust a move on her.  You may be shocked to hear that that never happened, Young MC.

One thing you wouldn’t have heard in the high school halls was someone reciting the entire song verbatim.  I don’t think anyone knew all the words.  Frankly, I didn’t know all of the lyrics until right before writing this post.  That was the other thing about this song, was that everyone who listened to it was in awe of your stone cold rhymin’.  Before you, we’d gotten a taste of the awesomeness of rap through DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and Tone Loc and LL Cool J, but for the most part, one could easily rap along.  But not you, Young MC.  You had a more rapid-fire approach that was hard to emulate, much like what I’d heard from the Beastie Boys, and it was in hearing this song that I finally understood that not all rap was the same.

This is a fantastic song, Young MC, and I’m lucky I was able to record it.

“Bust A Move”

Bust it

<awesome Young MC jam>

This here’s a jam for all the fellas
Try ta do what those ladies tell us
Get shot down ’cause ya overzealous
Play hard ta get, females get jealous
OK smarty
Go to a party
Girls are scantily clad and showin’ body, a chick walks by, ya wish ya could sex her, butcha standin’ on the wall like you was Poindexter

Next day’s function, high class luncheon
Food is served and yo stone cold munchin’
Music comes on, people start ta dance, but then ya ate so much ya nearly splitcha pants
A girl starts walkin’, guys start gawkin’, sits down next ta you and starts talkin’
Says she wanna dance ’cause she likes the groove, so come on, fatso, and just bust a move
(Oh)
(Oh)
(Yeah)
(Ho)
(Oh)
(Ho)
(Yeah)
(Ho)
Just bust a move
(Ho oh)
(Hey)
(Huh uh)
(Yeah)
(Oh)
(Ho)
(Yeah)
(Ho)
Yo on a mission and yo wishin’ someone could cure ya lonely condition
Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places, no fine girls, just ugly faces
From frustration, first inclination is to become a monk and leave the situation, but every dark tunnel has a lighter hope
So don’t hang yaself
With a celibate rope
(Oh)
New movie’s showin’
So yo goin’
Could care less about the five yo blowin’
(Oh)
Theater gets dark just ta start the show then ya spot a fine woman sittin’ in yo row
She’s dressed in yellow, she says “Hello, come sit next ta me, ya fine fellow.”
(Oh)
Ya run over there without a second ta lose, and what comes next, hey, bust a move

(If you want it)

(You got it)

(If you want it)
(Baaaby, you got it) just bust a move

(If you want it)

(You got it)

(You want it)
(Baaaby, you got it)

In the city, ladies look pretty
Guys tell jokes so they can seem witty
Tell a funny joke just ta get some play, then ya try ta make a move and she says, “No way.”

Girls are fakin’, goodness sakin’, they want a man who brings home the bacon
Got no money and ya got no car, then ya got no woman
An’ there you are
Some girls are sadistic, materialistic, lookin’ for a man makes them opportunistic
They lyin’ on the beach perpetratin’ a tan so that a brother with money can be their man
So on the beach yo strollin’, real high-rollin’, everything ya have is yours and not stolen
A girl runs up with somethin’ ta prove, so don’t just stand there, bust a move

(If you want it)

(You got it)

(You want it)
(Baaaby, you got it) just bust a move

(You want it)

(You got it)

(You want it)
(Baaaby, you got it) break it down for me, fellas

<awesome Young MC jam>

Yo best friend Harry has a brother Larry, in five days from now he’s gonna marry
He’s hopin’ you can make it there if you can ’cause in the ceremony you’ll be the best man

You say neato, check yo libido and roll to the church in ya new tuxedo.
The bride walks down just ta start the wedding and there’s one more girl you won’t be gettin’
So you start thinkin’, then ya start blinkin’
A bride maid looks and thinks thatcha winkin’
She thinks ya kinda cute so she winks back, and now ya feelin’ really firm ’cause the girl is stacked
Reception’s jumpin’, bass is pumpin’
Look at the girl and ya heart starts thumpin’
Says she wanna dance to a different groove
Now you know what ta do, G, bust a move

(If you want it)

(You got it)

(You want it)
(Baaaby, you got it) just bust a move

(You want it)

(You got it)

(You want it)
(Baaaby, you got it) move it, boyee
