Radio 54, side A, track 5: “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” by Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley, #39 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Jennifer Warnes Bill Medley - I've Had The Time Of My LifeOh, Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley, how ridiculously good is this song, am I right?  And we could use this post to talk about all my memories of watching “Dirty Dancing” over and over and over again (we had it on tape or something, and I watched it a lot).  But really, every time I hear this song I think about my wife and memories of her that I’ll never have.  What I mean is, when my wife and her sister and her cousins get together, usually around Christmas, at some point there will be a discussion of the movie, and invariably there will be a discussion of this song and the dancing that went along with it.  For while I enjoyed “Dirty Dancing” well enough, my wife and her family LOVE that movie.  And they LOVE to dance to it.  And they LOVE talking about how when my wife was just a young’un, they would recreate that final dance number when Johnny lifts Baby up into the air after all that hard work they put in in those montages.  My wife was just a baby herself in those days and was eminently liftable.

What you need to understand to understand why I love hearing about this story every year is that when my wife was a little girl, she was adorable. This is not opinion, Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley, this is an empirical fact.  I’ve seen pictures of her.  I’ve heard her voice on a recording her cousin made.  I’ve heard the stories about things she did and said as a wee one both from her and her family, and all of that data gives proof to the fact that she was indeed totes adorbs.  I mean, she’s pretty tiny and adorable now, to the point where it’s almost too much to bear, so I can’t even imagine how cute she was then.  I mean I can, but I generally don’t, because it really IS too much to bear.  As I’ve said before here, there are no plans on having kids, but if I had a guarantee that we could have a girl just like she was, I might MIGHT reconsider.  Although I’d probably spend way too much time documenting every single adorable thing she did.

Anyway, the point is, Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley, is that I’d already loved this song so much long before I met my wife.  And now when I hear it, I can’t help but smile thinking about her as a little girl running and jumping into her cousin’s waiting arms to be lifted into the air, and knowing that if I had any kind of upper body strength, she’d be constantly playing this song and leaping at me all the time.

“(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”

Now I’ve

Had the time of my life

No, I never felt like this before

Yes, I swear

It’s the truth

And I owe it all to you
‘Cause I’ve

Had the time of my life

And I owe it all to yooooooou

I’ve been waiting for so long
Now I’ve finally found someone to stand by me

We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical
Fantasyyy

Now with passion in our eyes
There’s no way we could disguise it secretly

So we take each other’s hand
‘Cause we seem to understand the urgencyyyyyy

Just remember

You’re the one thing

I can’t get enough of

So I tell you something

This could be love
Because

I had
The time of my life

No, I never felt this way before

Yes, I swear

It’s the truth
And I owe it all ta yooooooooou

Hey, baby!

With my body and soul, I wantchoo more than you’ll ever know

So we’ll
Just let it go, don’t be afraid
To lose control, no

Yes, I know what’s on your mind when you say
“Stay with me toniiiiight” (stay with me)
And remember

You’re the one thing
I can’t get enough of

So I tell you something

This could be love
Because

I’ve had
The time of my life

No, I never felt this way before

Yes, I swear (yes, I swear)
It’s the truth

And I owe it all ta you, ’cause I

Had the time of my life
And I’ve searched through every open door (never felt this waaay)
‘Til I found
The truth
And I owe it all ta yooooooou

<awesome Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley jam>

Now I’ve

It’s the truth
And I owe it all to you

I’ve had the time of my life

Yes, I swear

It’s the truth (it’s the truth)
And I owe it all ta you, ’cause I

Had the time of my life (I had the time’a my life)
