Radio XXVII, side B, track 9: “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison

Poison - Every Rose Has Its ThornOh, Poison, this blog has been a fascinating barometer of my personal musical tastes back in the day.  Well, fascinating to me, anyway, it would be a bit much to think it was fascinating to anyone besides myself, but if you’re equally fascinated, then I’m flattered, Poison.  What’s been the most fascinating to me is how many times I recorded certain songs.  As the years moved on, my infatuation with the radio and the taping of songs off it faded, and this has been a nostalgic wonderland for me.

Like, for example, this song.  I knew I enjoyed it back in the day, but I didn’t realize how MUCH I liked it.  I apparently taped this song pretty much every single time it ever came on the radio.  This is certainly not the first song I recorded multiple times, and it won’t be the last, including by you, Poison, but for me, it’s interesting all the same.  There were certainly other songs that I loved more than this one that I only recorded once, and maybe it’s because they didn’t work for me as well then as they do now, or maybe I loved them but the radio didn’t and therefore I didn’t have as many opportunities to record them.  But this song was the perfect storm, Poison.  I loved it and the radio loved it, which made me just like  a perp on “CSI” or “Law and Order”.  I had the means, motive, and opportunity to record this song, and so I did, because not to would have been a crime.  Did I really just write that?

Anyway, I’d like to just have this on record that even though you guys have become something of a caricature of yourselves at this point, which is saying something because you were already kind of caricatures of yourself when you were really big, you guys were a pretty big deal when I was a kid, and this song is one of the big reasons why.  And while all of you may not have held up well, this song most definitely has.  Having just listened to it for the unknownth time, I will testify to that.  As to why I started using a lot of police procedural metaphors in this post, that is a question that will remain unanswered.  There must have been a marathon on USA or something. . .

“Every Rose Has Its Thorn”

We both lie silently still in the dead of the night

Although we both lie close together
We feel miles apart inside

Was it somethin’ I said or somethin’ I did
Did my words not come out right

Though I tried not ta hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that’s why they say every rose has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn
(Yeah, it does)

<awesome Poison jam>

I listen to our favorite song
Playin’ on the radio

Hear the DJ say love’s a game of easy come and
Easy go

But I wonder
Does he know
Has he ever felt like this

And I know that you’d be here right now if I
Could’a let ya know somehow, I guess every rose
Has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thooooorn

Though it’s been a while now
I can still feel so much pain

Like the knife that cuts ya, the wound heals
But the scar
That scar remaaaains

<awesome Poison jam>

I know I could’a saved our love that night if I’d
Known what ta say

‘Stead’a makin’ love
We both
Made our separate ways

And now I
Hear ya found somebody new
And that I never meant that much ta you
Ta hear that tears me up inside
Ta see you cuts me
Like a knife, I guess every rose has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn
