Radio XXXV, side A, track 8: “Love Train” by Hall & Oates

Hall & Oates - Love TrainOh, Hall & Oates, I don’t even know what to write about for this post.  I’ve been sitting here staring at the screen trying to figure out where to start.  Which is sometimes the hardest thing to do when it comes to writing.  So I guess I’ll just keep typing and see what happens.  We could talk about my memories of “Earth Girls Are Easy”, of which I was a fan even before I realized that Jim Carrey  was in it, and long before I truly appreciated the mad genius that is Jeff Goldblum (or The Pull-Out King for you “Portlandia” fans).  I haven’t seen it in forever, and I have a feeling it might not hold up well, but I certainly watched it a lot when I was young.  Initially, I watched it just because of the title.  I was hoping to see just how easy those earth girls were.  Not as easy as I would have liked, it turns out.

I know I’m not really talking much about the song, Hall & Oates, so you’ll have to forgive me.  We all know you guys are great, so we don’t need to belabor the point, and this isn’t the last Hall & Oates song I would ever record, so there’s plenty of time to sing your praises later.

What I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, though, is my feelings about women.  No, I’m not about to jump out of the closet or anything like that, Hall & Oates, but as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’m surrounded by women in my life.  I’ve been surrounded by women my WHOLE life.  My best friend from infancy was a girl, and I’ve always related to women more than men.  In general.

But I’ve thought about that a lot lately, about how I’ve been friends with women my whole life, but I don’t know that I’ve really truly empathized with them.  Case in point, my wife and I were watching “Game Of Thrones” a few weeks ago, and there was that scene at (spoiler!) the Sept where Joffrey is laying in state and Jaime and Cersei have a tryst next to his corpse.  That’s how I watched it, anyway.  My wife considered it a rape scene.  I thought it was just another example of their messed up relationship.  But from what I understand, most of the internet disagreed with me and sided with my wife.

So that caused a lot of soul-searching for me, since it’s more than a little disconcerting when you don’t realize you’ve watched a rape scene.  And then it struck me again as I was listening to this song and remembering how as a young boy I was tantalized by that whole “Earth Girls Are Easy” title and that whole concept of a woman being “easy” and how I forget that I view the world through the lens of a middle-class white guy and that I don’t always do a good job of viewing the world through other lenses, which is important, because even something as innocuous-seeming (to me) of walking alone down a dark street at night would be a whole different experience for my wife.

Huh.

I guess I had stuff to write about after all, Hall & Oates.  I don’t know that I’m any closer to a point than I was at the beginning of this meandering thing, but thanks for listening all the same.
