Oh, Starship, this song! Oh, Starship, this movie! Where to begin, Starship?
If there was one movie that shaped my childhood more than any other, it was “Mannequin“. I loved it then, and I love it now, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it, but it’s more than I can count.
What is it that I love about it, you ask? Well, let me tell you:
–It introduced me to Kim Cattrall, who I would love from the first moment I saw her dressed as an Egyptian princess who would eventually become a time-traveling mannequin and at one point would flash the camera wearing nothing but a fur coat and a bikini (that image kept me warm on many a cold Minnesota night). If you’d told me that later on in life I would be able to see her naked multiple times on “Sex and the City” I would very much have looked forward to the future.
–It introduced me to Andrew McCarthy, but more importantly, it introduced me to the wonderful lunacy that is James Spader.
–It made me realize that Estelle Getty was actually much younger than Sophia from “The Golden Girls”
–It introduced me to homosexuality as being a normal, everyday part of life. I doubt very much that the gay community would look at Meshach Taylor’s portrayal of Hollywood, the gay window dresser, as being a great gay role model, but as a kid, when I realized that Hollywood had a crush on Andrew McCarthy, it made complete sense and I never thought there was anything wrong with it and in fact loved Hollywood very much and wished he was my friend.
–It introduced me to Starship and this amazing song that to this day fills me with a deep feeling of love and happiness.
And let’s not forget the quotes, Starship! To this day, I quote “Mannequin” on a fairly frequent basis.
If I want to make a dramatic exit? “I’m a dream that once was.”
If I find that someone has done or said something kinda gross? “Ew, Switcher, you are one sick puppy. . .”
If I’m sick of someone’s canine? “Screw your dog!”
And the one quote that has defined my life and has best been summed up by the movie “Mannequin”? “Reality is very disappointing.”
I understand that many don’t find my love of “Mannequin” as normal or in good taste, Starship, but here’s one more quote that I think of when I’m faced with such criticism, direct from your song: “Let ’em say we’re crazy.  What do they know?” You tell ’em, Starship!
