Oh, Bee Gees, I think we can all agree that your “Saturday Night Fever” crazy falsetto disco phase was absolutely fantastic and perfect and encapsulated an era better than any other musicians did for that time and place. But I gotta tell ya, Bee Gees, this soft-spoken number gives all those leisure-suit masterpieces a run for their inflated ’70s-era money. There’s just enough of that Bee Gees vibe to tell you that this is a Bee Gees tune, but it’s this quiet, unassuming Bee Gees that if the DJ hadn’t said so, you might not be completely convinced that this was indeed a Bee Gees tune. But it was and it is and I’m really glad that I was able to record this back when it was hot and new.
And it’s about the best title to a song ever, because that’s my favorite part of this particular tune, when you sing “one”. Not the first time, when you sing “Baby, you and I should be one”. It’s that second “one” that follows right after it, this shy little echo that feels like it’s off by just a beat and yet it feels absolutely perfectly placed. Every time I listen to this song, and every time I quietly sing along to it, when I get to that “one”, I sing it oh so gently and I hold up my index finger. Every time. I don’t know why, but it seems like that has to happen for the moment to be perfect.
I don’t know if I recorded any other Bee Gees songs off the radio back then, Bee Gees, but if I only recorded one, this is the perfect one.
One.
“One”
Feel my heeeeart beat
When you run your fingers through my haaaair
Oh yeah
I can teeell you
I can feel you by my side when you’re not there
Oh yeah
Just as my life fades ta darkness
You made me see the light
Show me that my search is over
I pay the price
I pay the price
Tell you sooome day
Baby, you and I should be one
One
Oh, yeah
Do it always
Brighter than the eye can see, we hide the sun
The taste of love is sweet
Like honey on the vine
Like the wind that feeds the fire
Two souls become entwined
Sooome day
Baby, you and I should be one
One
So I’m standin’ on this corner
Tall enough to touch the New York sky
Yeah
My love is soooo blind
I just cannot hear or see the world go by
Oh yeah
Someone can love so completely
One kiss should break the seal
Truth can be stranger than fiction
This love is real
This love is real
Tell you sooome day
Baby, you and I should be one
One
Do it always
Brighter than the eye can see, we hide the sun
Oh yeah
Ooo
Ahhhhhhhh
We are one
We are one
I will follow
Count on me, I’ll never letcha down
Oh yeah
My devoootion
Lovin’ like an ocean
I will surely drown
Oh yeah
You’ll be my only possession
I’ll be a slaaave ta you
We hold the power together
Just me and you
Just me and you
Tell you sooome day
Baby, you and I should be one
One
Oh, yeah
Tell you sooome day (some day)
Baby, you and I should be one (you and I should be)
One
Ohhhh
(I think)
(Somebody might)
(I go)
(Down on my knees)
(Ya see)
(Love can be blind)
(It’s there)
(Under your fear) Ya know my life is in your hands
(I know)
(I must be strong) And every breath you take is planned
(And go)
(Into the night) And all this love goes on forever
(And see)
(All that I want)
Tell you sooome day
Baby, you and I should be one
One
Do it always
Baby, you and I should be one (you and I should be)
One
I tell you soooome day
Baby, you and I should be one (you and I)
One
Do it always
