Radio XII, side B, track 8: “Rigor Mortis” by A Split-Second

Oh, A Split-Second, here’s a fun story.  In all the years I had this song on tape, I had no idea what the name of it was, who sang it or what the lyrics were.  There were quite a few songs on my tape collection where I didn’t know the real title of the song or who sang it, but until you, thanks to a little on-line detective work, I was able to solve all my musical mysteries.  But not you, A Split-Second.  I listened to the song and loved it as I always did, but the lyrics were a little hard to understand and the DJ didn’t say who you were.  And the song was unlike anything I’d yet heard on my beloved radio station.  It was so dark.  It was like listening to Freddy Krueger and/or Pinhead if they had their own band.  And this was the only time I ever heard it on the radio, the one time I recorded it.  For awhile, I was starting to worry that this was out of a Stephen King novel, where I had accidentally captured this song that no one else had ever heard, like it was from a different dimension and everyone who heard it would slowly go mad.

So finally, in desperation, I had my friend from work listen to it.  This friend, by the way, was the one who taught me how to convert all my tapes to mp3s, so he’s also a saint.  He’s also pretty much a musical genius, but even so I thought it was a long shot.  So he pressed play, and immediately a huge smile spread across his face.  He knew who you were right away, A Split-Second, and he knew the name of the song was “Rigor Mortis” (which makes perfect sense to me now) and in fact he and his wife had just been listening to it a few days before.

That’s about as serendipitous as you can get, A Split-Second, and thankfully I didn’t play a song for him that would slowly drive us both mad.  Also, my friend had up ’til then thought this blog was a quaint little project, but thanks to you, A Split-Second, he developed a new-found respect for my beloved radio station and its wonderful mix masters.  Including whatever sick mind decided to slip this one into the playlist.

“Rigor Mortis”

<awesome A Split-Second jam>

Cold and alone in the vineyard he lies

Stained and all broken the nightingale dies

Lookin’ from your window

I can see the snow

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing cold

<awesome A Split-Second jam>

Cold and alone in the vineyard he lies

Stained and all broken the nightingale dies

Grinding to a halt on stone-cold gravel
Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze alone

<awesome A Split-Second jam>

Turning away from the wasted hours
Turning away from the wasted years
Turning away from the wasted hours
Turning away from the wasted years
