Radio VII, side A, track 9: “The First Day Of Summer” by Tony Carey

Oh, Tony Carey, you made summer seem like it might not be that great.  I get it, Tony Carey.  I mean, summer does mean that school is out and all, but for me it also meant a long summer of baling hay and walking beans and for the most part being trapped on the farm because I didn’t have a driver’s license so there was nowhere to go except for church on Sundays (which wasn’t much of an escape).  It just really struck me that while most songs singing about the summer involved how awesome it was, particularly the girls, that this song seemed kind of depressing and intense.  Here you were on your way to Southern California (which could just as well have been Oz to me, it was so distant and magical), but it didn’t sound like you were having much fun, getting carjacked and stuck working at the Holiday Inn and all.  I know in your song you say “don’t it feel so good” and “it feels so good” and all, but I felt like maybe you were being sarcastic, because it seemed like everything that was happening to you wouldn’t feel good at all.  And it made me realize that maybe being able to jump in a car and get away from where you were wasn’t necessarily the most perfect thing I imagined it to be.

“The First Day Of Summer”

Well, the kid and me were the team to beat
We could stand up with the big boys
Generate some heat

And we never thought nothin’ ’bout livin’ on the street back then

Yes and we lied a little
And we maybe stole some
Sayin’ “Southern California, here we come”
And we took off down the highway sayin'”Never goin’ back again”

It was on the
First day of summer (first day of summer)
We were the number one out-front runner (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer
Nothin’ feels the same
And it feels so good

It was on the first day of summer (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer
The whole world knows your name
And it feels so good

Now the kid was drivin’ and I rode shotgun
We were splittin’ up the money from our number ones
Beatin’ time to the radio
Yes, I’m gonna be someone

Camping by the road out in Santa Fe

The kid stole the keys and then he drove away

And I wound up washin’ dishes in a Holiday Inn

Sometimes I wonder what became of him

It was on the
First day of summer (first day of summer)
We were the number one out-front runner (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer
Nothin’ feels the same
And it feels so good

It was on the first day of summer (first day of summer)
It was on the first day of summer (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer
The whole world knows your name
Don’t it feel good

It was on the first day of summer (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer (first day of summer)
On the first day of summer
The whole world knows your name
