Radio XXX, side A, track 8: “Dreamin'” by Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams - Dreamin'Oh, Vanessa Williams, I’m sorry you had to be a pioneer of sorts.  This was the first song I’d ever heard by you, and I don’t know if it was before this song or after that I learned of the whole scandal involving the nude photos of yourself.  I of course was intrigued that there were naked photos of you out there somewhere.  But I didn’t know that more importantly you were the first African-American Miss America (thanks to Wikipedia, now I do).  And while I in general give the whole Miss America thing short shrift, I respect the accomplishment and feel bad that you had to give up your crown for some naked pictures.

Which is where that whole pioneer thing comes in.  It seems pretty quaint now that someone in the entertainment industry would be asked to give up a crown or a career or whatever because some naked photos showed up somewhere.  In fact, these days, an “accidental” naked photo or sex tape or what-have-you can make someone’s career.  So it’s all kinds of bullshit that you had to deal with it being a scandal back then.  I can’t say for sure what my opinion was of the whole thing back then, but besides liking the idea that I could potentially see you naked, I think even then I recognized that the powers that be were making much ado about nothing (not calling you nothing, of course, Vanessa Williams, but you know what I’m saying).

The great thing about you, Vanessa Williams, is that you’re what I like to think of as a classy lady.  There were and are a lot of women who might have cashed in on that notoriety and maybe even posed for more pictures.  But you made yourself a legitimate career because you have legitimate talent.  Case in point, this great song, the first one that I’d heard by you, and while not my favorite of your songs, it’s pretty damn great.  And I’ll admit, at the time, I was dreamin’ of getting my hands on some of those pics of you, but I was a young teenage boy, so I hope you’ll forgive the hormones.  I’m just glad that that whole mess is just a small footnote in your life now, and it’s your beauty and talent and music I think of when I think of you.

“Dreamin'”

Da da daaa da (dreamin’, dreamin’)
Da-da daaa da (dreamin’, dreamin’)
Do do dooo do

For the life of me I never thought that it could be
The way it stands right noooow

Emotions running high
Every night I wish that I

Tell ya how

Those words are here in my heeeeart
Oh, but there is just one missing paaart

How to put it together

How ta say it right

And letcha know that
Every night

I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hopin’, baby, you will be there (hopin’, baby)
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hopin’, baby, you will be there (hopin’, baby, you will be there)

Let me take time out
To try and find out

If this could be reeeal

‘Cause reality scares me (scaares me)
I’ve been livin’ a fantasy
How should I feeeel

Those words are here in my heeeart
Oh, but there is just one missing paaaart

How to put it together

How ta say it right

And letchoo know that
Every night

I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hopin’, baby, you will be there (hopin’, baby)
I’ll be dreamin’
Dreamin’
Hopin’, baby, you will be there (hopin’, baby, you will be there)

Those words are here in my heeeart

But there is just one missing paaaart

(How to put it together) How to put it together
