Radio 79, side B, track 12: “Your Song” by Elton John

Elton John - Your SongOh, Elton John, what a pleasant way to end the week.  So ridiculously good.  I don’t know that I was aware of this song when I was first recording music off the radio back in the late ’80s, and I honestly don’t know when I first heard it or where I’ve heard it, it’s just always existed.  I was reading the annotations on this one as I was listening to it, and I very much appreciate the songwriter’s thoughts about this one:

“Your Song” could only have been written by a 17-year-old who’d never been laid in his life.

Yeah, that sounds about right, Elton John.  I would never pretend to be able to match your amazingness, but from a young age to probably my mid-twenties and a few pockets thereafter, I most definitely fancied myself quite the romantic wordsmith.  I wrote my fair share of love letters, most of which I hope have been angrily burned by the recipient at this point, or at least apathetically tossed in the trash.  And I guarantee that while they didn’t match the loveliness of this song’s lyrics, the sentiments were all there.  Because yeah, being in love makes the world damned more palatable.  And while I don’t know that I’m in that puppy love phase any longer, besides that we do have puppies and we do love them, having my wife beside me has made life worth living, many times quite literally.

You see, Elton John?  I’m just not that good at it.  Which means in the future, I need to do the smart thing and just co-opt your lyrics for my own purposes.  Thanks for making a song for all of us.
