Radio 80, side B, track 4: “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, T.I., and Pharrell Williams

Blurred Lines - Robin ThickeOh, Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell, this came out right as I was starting to get back into listening to music (and recording it off the radio).  So I missed most of the controversy surrounding this one, other than peripherally hearing that the video featured a lot of naked women (but as far as I can tell, none of y’all were naked in it).  It seems like a pretty great song.  I can certainly see how some might interpret it as “rape-y”, and I’m sure the video didn’t help, but this doesn’t sound any less creepy than lyrics like “Girl, you’ll be a woman soon” and “Young girl get out of my mind, my love for you is way out of line”.  So maybe a little creepy.  Frankly, it wasn’t the song itself that annoyed me so much as reading some of your responses to your critics making it sound like this was some work of high art that perfectly captures the nature of human beings.  I mean, I already knew Pharrell is a master at talking out of his ass because I’ve had to endure him while my wife watches “The Voice”.  But to pretend that this is something more elevated than a song about wanting to have sex with a girl who may or may not be interested in you, and let’s be real, as an excuse to make a video with naked women, then the only blurred lines here are those on the bullshit meter aimed straight at y’all.  Catchy tune, though.
