Oh, Ready For The World, there’s no greater buzzkill than when a sexy song about a sexy woman happens to also be the name of a relative. It’s bound to happen in any person’s life, and for me there was an even greater chance since my mom has 11 brothers and sisters, my dad has another 3, and I have 40+ first cousins (at some point I lost count). And as unluck would have it, I happen to have an aunt named Sheila, which basically made this song off-limits. I also couldn’t fully enjoy “Sheila” by Tommy Roe and don’t even get me started on “Sheila” by Steelheart, which includes the lyrics “Sheila likes tequila”. I don’t know if my aunt Sheila likes tequila, but I do like my aunt Sheila, so any song involving her name, I keep a respectful distance.
By the way, Ready For The World, how do you pronounce “aunt”? Growing up in Minnesota, it’s pronounced “awnt” and if you pronounced it “ant” you’d be excoriated. But now that I live in Texas, the expected way to say it is “ant”. But I just can’t bring myself to pronounce it that way. And when I do pronounce it the Minnesota way, I get ribbed for putting on airs because it sounds like I’m using a British accent or something. And for some reason, the word “aunt” comes up a lot more than I’d realized. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
One more thing, Ready For The World. This is a pretty sensual song, as much as I feel comfortable using the word “sensual” so close to “Sheila”, anyway. So I was highly amused when you started singing that you wanted to deedle deedle dee. That’s about the least sexy thing I can imagine saying to someone that you want to, well, deedle deedle dee. But it’s really fun to say. So from now on, when I’m feeling amorous, I’m just going to say that I’m in the mood to deedle deedle dee. I’ll let you know how it goes.
