Oh, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, you may remember a few years ago I mentioned that I played the role of Danny Zuko in our high school production of “Grease”. Â You may also remember that when I re-watched a video recording of that performance, I was a bit crestfallen to realize that I didn’t sound anywhere near as good as I thought I did. Â Which, thanks to selective memory, I’d really believed I sounded really great in it. Â Maybe not as great as y’all, but pretty close.
Now, my little brother was also in the play, and he played Doody, and he sang “Those Magic Changes”, and he WAS great, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Â Like, really great. Â And that’s not just selective memory, that’s after watching that same production where I was not good at all. Â Alas, just like I didn’t pursue a career in acting (thankfully), my brother didn’t pursue a singing career (woefully). Â He’s seriously good, you two. Â Kinda wonder how he’d do on “The Voice”.
Anyway, besides reminiscing about how my memory of my theater days are much rosier than the apparent reality, this song and that movie has stood the test of time. Â It’s seriously amazing, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Â I don’t know how many times I’ve watched “Grease” and heard this song. Â It’s a lot. Â Same with my wife. Â I typically listen to each track with my headphones on, but when my wife found out which song I was writing about for this post, I let the speakers do the talking and we sang a duet right along with you. Â Was it as good as your version? Â Obvs.
Well, maybe not, but we both had really shitty days, and now when I think of this song, my first thought isn’t going to be about my mediocre high school performance of it, but of my wife and I smiling at each other and singing along despite the sucktitude of the day. Â And just like that, I’ve found another song to add to my growing list of official theme songs for this blog. Â Kinda makes me wanna sing. . .
