Radio XXXVIII, side B, track 2: “Where Are You Now?” by Jimmy Harnen and Synch

Synch - Where Are You NowOh, Jimmy Harnen and Synch, how I absolutely loved this song.  I think this might have been the only time I recorded this one, but it doesn’t change the fact that I listened to it all the damn time, much like yesterday’s wonderful tune.  Except, a small confession here, Jimmy Harnen and Synch, I thought this was REO Speedwagon.  Listening to it now, I of course realize that there’s no way that this was REO Speedwagon, but I think you can understand the confusion.  For one thing, I just didn’t know any better, and for another, you’ve gotta admit that this sounds similar to many of those beloved REO Speedwagon power ballads that I also loved and still love dearly.  Listening to it now, I realize that it’s more REO Speedwagon Lite.  It’s like if there were a Muppet Babies version of REO Speedwagon.  And there’s nothing wrong with that.  I loved the Muppet Babies cartoon as much as I loved the Muppets.

Speaking of the Muppet Babies, I’m not sure why I’m about to tell you this, but one of my more humiliating moments as a child revolved around the Muppet Babies.  My mom was going to take me and my brother to see “The Muppets Take Manhattan”, and I was pretty excited because I’d heard that there were going to be baby versions of the Muppets (this was before the cartoon came out, so the idea of baby versions of Kermit and Gonzo and Fozzie was still new and mind-blowing).  The problem was, I had a little bit of a potty-training issue.  I won’t make you have to do the math, Jimmy Harnen and Synch, I was about 8 years old at the time.

And I. . .well, we’re all friends here, so I’ll just say it.  I didn’t like to poop.  I think part of it may have stemmed from when one of my cousins burst into the bathroom one time when I was trying to go and they stood there and laughed at me and wouldn’t leave, which is why I’ve quadruple-checked bathroom locks to this day, but from what I understand, I wore diapers for quite a long time longer than I should have.  And most of it was because I didn’t like to poop.  So I’d try not to for the longest time, but since I also ate like a maniac, eventually something would have to give.  And sometimes it would give in my underwear.

Understandably, my parents were more than a little frustrated with this particular issue, especially my mom, who had to clean the tighty whiteys that were no longer white.  And right before we were supposed to be going to see Kermit and the gang head to New York, to quote Britney:  “Oops, I did it again.”  I don’t remember how my latest accident was discovered, but I do remember that my mom was furious, and she took my little brother to Marshall to see the movie (my little POTTY-TRAINED brother, I might add) and left me crying at home.  To this day, whenever I see that “The Muppets Take Manhattan” is going to be on TV or see a DVD of it somewhere or what-have-you, there’s always a brief shudder as I think back to me sitting on the floor of our basement in dirty underwear bawling my eyes out because my butt had ruined my chance of seeing the latest Muppets adventure.

It was only a few years ago that I finally sat down and watched the whole movie from beginning to end, and no surprise, I absolutely loved it.  And didn’t poop my pants once.

Sooooo, I just told you that story, Jimmy Harnen and Synch. . .

Awkward.

Love this song, though, guys. . .

“Where Are You Now?”

All alone t’night

I’m callin’ out your name

Somewhere deep inside
This part of you remains

Images of love

Take me back in time

I don’t know how it started
Why it ever had to end

But somethin’ stepped insiiide
We didn’t let it in

It’s keepin’ us apart
Where are you noooow

Where are you noooow
Someone there tonight

Holdin’ what was miiiiiiine

Where are you nooow
Do you wonder where I am
Are you really feelin’ fiiiine

Goin’ through my life

Withoutchoo by my side

You’re the only thing
Keeps goin’ through my mind

And nothin’ that I do
Can take the place of yooooou

Where are you noooow
Someone there t’night

Holdin’ what was miiiiiiine

Where are you nooow
Do you wonder where I am
Are you really feelin’ fiiiine

Ooo, thinkin’ about you, girl
There’s gotta be a place for me

Somewhere in your heeeeeeeeeeeeart

<awesome Jimmy Harnen and Synch jam>
