Radio 53, side A, track 3: “Morning Train (Nine To Five)” by Sheena Easton, #57 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Sheena Easton - Morning TrainOh, Sheena Easton, I had no idea that you sang this song when it showed up on the countdown.  Just like my Chipmunks album introduced me to a lot of early ’80s pop music, so too did another little album called “Mini*Pops”.  If you’re not familiar with the Mini*Pops, Sheena Easton, it was a series of records released by K-Tel (ahh, how I loved you, K-Tel. . .) that featured little kids singing current (at the time) hits.  It was like Kidz Bop before Kidz Bop.  (I say that like I know what Kidz Bop is, but I’ve never actually heard any of their stuff.  But I’m assuming it’s the same.)

Anyway, Sheena Easton, I listened to that Mini*Pops album all the time, and this was one of the songs on it.  I loved that album, Sheena Easton.  Even though I didn’t realize I had any knowledge of contemporary music, I actually did thanks to that album that I played over and over.  What I didn’t realize at the time, and why would I?, was that some of those songs are actually pretty creepy when sung by a five-year-old.  I also didn’t know that this had been a British TV show, and it’s even creepier seeing a little girl dressed up like you, Sheena Easton, and singing about making love.  Ew.  How this did not occur to any grown-ups involved in this is disturbing to me.  Or maybe it did occur to them.  Double ew.

Anywho, in retrospect, this song has the most ick factor due to the Mini*Pops (you can watch the video below for confirmation, or you can just trust me on it), but despite the fact that it was an ill-conceived idea, if it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn’t have known about this song until I was 14 years old, which doesn’t seem right.  Although it does kinda make me feel gross about it after watching that video (you really don’t need to watch it, Sheena Easton).

Whatever.  It’s a great song, and frankly, it’s a great bit of propaganda to get men off their asses and into work if they know you’re at home waiting for them.  Definitely makes me feel more motivated to keep my nose to the grindstone.  Who cares about job satisfaction when you’ve got Sheena Easton to come home to, am I right?

Don’t tell my wife I wrote that. . .

“Morning Train (Nine To Five)”

<awesome Sheena Easton jam>

I wake up every mornin’
Stumble outta bed

Stretchin’ and’a yawnin’
Another day ahead

It seems to last forever
And time goes slowly by

‘Til babe and me’s together
Then it starts ta fly

‘Cause the moment that he’s with me
Time can take a flight

Moment that he’s with me
Everything’s all right

Night time is the right time
We make love

Then it’s his and my time
We take ooooff

My baby takes the mornin’ train
He works from nine to five and then
He takes another home again
To find me waitin’ for him

My baby takes the mornin’ train
He works from nine to five and then
He takes another home again
To find me waitin’ for him

He takes me to a movie
Or to a restaurant
Ta go
Slow dancin’
Anythin’ I want

Only when he’s with me
I catch light
Only when he gives me
Makes me feel all riiiiight

My baby takes the mornin’ train
He works from nine to five and then
He takes another home again
To find me waitin’ for him

All day I think of him
Dreamin’ of him constantly

I’m crazy mad for him and he’s crazy mad for me (crazy mad for meeeee)
When he steps off that train
Amazingly full
Of fight

Work all day
Ta earn his pay
So we can play all niiiiiiiight

My baby takes the mornin’ train
He works from nine to five and then
He takes another home again
To find me waitin’ for him

He’s always on that mornin’ train
(He works from nine to five and then) he works so haaaard
(He takes another home again)
To find me waitin’ for him

Ooooooooooo (my baby takes the mornin’ train)
