Radio XXXVI, side B, track 5: “Nobody Knows” by Mike + The Mechanics

Mike and the Mechanics - Nobody KnowsOh, Mike + The Mechanics, thanks for depressing me for the day.  Seriously, guys, how much of a bummer is this song?  Don’t get me wrong, Mike + The Mechanics, I absolutely love this song.  Immensely.  Moreso now than when I first recoded it.  But damn.  And what the hell, Mylan Ray?  It’s not even 9 in the morning and you’re pulling out somber stuff like this?  Come on, dude.  How are we supposed to face the day when we’ve heard one of the most depressing songs about failed relationships ever?

It’s all right, Mylan, I’ll forgive you.  You see, Mike + The Mechanics, while I’m pretty sure most of the DJs were actually broadcasting out of Dallas, TX, Mylan Ray was actually a real-live local DJ, right there in Pipestone.  And I’ve always had a special place for him in my heart because he was the DJ at my aunt’s wedding at the Lake Wilson American Legion (where my wife and I had our wedding reception last year, by the way), and I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8, and Mylan let me get behind his little DJ set-up and announce one of the songs.  It was a pretty great moment in my life, Mike + The Mechanics, and had I had some initiative back then, there’s a good chance that maybe, just maybe, instead of writing this blog about music I recorded off the radio so long ago, maybe instead I’d actually be rubbing elbows with Mylan Ray himself and working with him at KISD FM as a DJ.  Which was one of the many things I wanted to be and then wasn’t.

It would also mean that maybe I’d also be working with Diane Marie.  I’ve had a crush on Diane Marie all my life, Mike + The Mechanics.  Thinking about it now, she might be the reason that I’ve got a thing for voices.  Her calm, soothing voice was always the high point of any radio broadcast.  The only problem with her was that the main times you’d hear her were when there was severe weather.  So if her voice came on the radio, it usually meant that disaster would soon follow.  But the thing is, you were kinda okay with it, because her voice was just so damn calming that it was hard to believe anything bad could really happen.

Where was I?

Right.  This song.  So anyway, Mike + The Mechanics, this song is really damn glum, ya know?  I don’t know what’s worse, breaking up because you don’t love someone anymore, breaking up with someone because they don’t love you anymore, or breaking up with someone because you both love each other, just not quite enough (as this song so aptly, depressingly demonstrates).  I’ve gotta say, Mike + The Mechanics, I’ve been in all three scenarios, and to me, it’s a three-way tie.  They all suck.  But if there’s a silver lining to any of it, it’s that it inspires great songs like this one.

“Nobody Knows”

<awesome Mike + The Mechanics jam>

There is nothin’ wrong with me, theeere’s nothin’ wrong with you

Maybe we’re just bliiind ta see each other’s point of view

Nobody knows what we haaaad

Nobody knows what we haaaad

You could do much better, you could do much worse than me
I could have walked right out on you, there was nothin’ stoppin’ me

Nobody knows what we haaaaaad

Ahh, nobody knows what we haaaad

We were runnin’ out of passion
We were runnin’ out of time

There’s a face ta fit the future
There’s a face ta fit the criiime

Now the truth is on the table
And the ghost is plain to seeeee
There’s nothin’ wrong with you or meeeee

Heeeey

Ohh, nobody knows what we haaaad

Nobody knows what we haaaad

I won’t live in your world, you can’t live in mine
We don’t hate each other, darlin’
We just gave up tryin’

Nobody knows what we haaaad

Nobody knows what we haaaad

<awesome Mike + The Mechanics jam>

Mmmmmm

Nobody knooows

We were runnin’ out of passion
We were runnin’ out of time

There’s a face ta fit the future
There’s a face ta fit the criiime

Now the truth is on the table
And the ghost is plain to seeeee
There’s nothin’ wrong with you or meeeee, ohhh
Maybe I’m not cryin’

Maybe I don’t mind

But it hurts just knowin’ that ya children won’t be mine

Nobody knows what we haaaad

Nobody knows what we haaaad

Maybe I don’t know what we haaaad

(Nobody knows what we had)
Now I’m not cryin’

(Nobody knows what we had)

‘Cause nobody knooows (nobody knows what we had)
What we haaaaad
(Nobody knows what we had)
There is nothing wrong
