Oh, Richard Marx, as much as I enjoy your “Back off, man!” attitude from some of the songs we’ve heard from you on here recently, I feel much more comfortable listening to songs like this one. Â It’s not that I don’t appreciate your tough guy persona (such as it is), but we all know that you’re not fooling anyone with those songs, Richard Marx. Â This song represents the Richard Marx we paid our money to see. Â Or. . .well. . .I don’t know that I’ve ever actually paid money to see you, Richard Marx, but if I had, I would be much more excited to hear this kind of song.
Thing is, I wouldn’t actually want to go to one of your concerts, Richard Marx. Â Nothing against you, of course, because I absolutely adore you. Â I don’t have much urge to see any singer or band in concert. Â I totally appreciate that there are a large number of people who believe that music is a communal experience, and that’s great. Â But I’m not much of a communal person, and in general, being the introspective introvert that I am, I’m a firm believer that music is a very personal experience. Â Sure, there are songs that are probably best enjoyed in a large group of people, but “Angelia” is not one of those songs, Richard Marx. Â MOST of your songs are not those songs. Â I don’t want to be around a bunch of people while you’re singing this and “Right Here Waiting” and “Hold On To The Nights”. Â Why not just show up to random funerals while we’re at it, Richard Marx? Â Your songs are masterpieces of heartbreak and sadness, and I love to feel that sweet ache that they bring, but not where anyone can see me.
And by the way, if there’s anyone out there named Angelia who shows up at one of your concerts, Richard Marx, you stay far away from them. Â Anyone who happens to have that name and has heard this song and then shows up to be around you has got something going on that you don’t want.
