Oh, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, there are a lot of things I’ll believe, but one thing I WON’T believe is that there was ever a time when you believed in hatred and anger overwhelmed your very soul as you suggest in this awesome song that I’d totally forgotten about and am totally back in love with. I understand that there’s nothing that should surprise me about human nature, but I don’t know that I can live in a world where a band that made some of the mellowest music I ever heard in my teenage years ever knew such base feelings. Whatever it was that caused you hate and anger, it had to be pretty major. I mean, you guys have your heads filled with stuff like “shooting rubberbands at the stars” and “religion is a smile on a dog”. I can’t imagine anything causing you to see red.
I’m sure there are a lot of things in the world that would cause you to say “bummer, man”, but anger and hatred are not emotions I would ever equate with you, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. Regardless, the good news is that whatever it was, it’s in the past. I’d love to say that I was as evolved as you and also didn’t believe in hate and that anger doesn’t overwhelm my soul from time to time. But I’m NOT as evolved as you, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. Compared to your chillaxed worldview, I’m just emerging from the swamps on barely formed legs. But I enjoy the hell out of your music, so I feel like that’s a slow, wobbling step in the right direction.
