Radio XLVI, side B, track 1: “Walking On Air” by Stephen Bishop

Oh, Stephen Bishop, I love, love, love this song.  See what I did there?  This is one of those songs that made the hours and hours and hours AND hours sitting in front of the stereo making tapes absolutely worth it.  The only time I ever heard this song was whatever Sunday it was that I recorded this song off the Hot New Music Hour, but I listened to it countless times afterwards.  This is one of those songs that just made me so unbelievably happy every time I heard it.  It’s one of those songs that sounds exactly like what you’re singing about.  Your voice is so light and happy, it DOES sound like you’re walking on air, Stephen Bishop, and I felt like I was, too, every time I listened to it.  It made my soul feel lighter, and for a kid with undiagnosed depression and anxiety issues, I can tell you that my soul was not always light.  In fact, my soul was RARELY light.  And now, now the whole idea of even HAVING a soul is in question.  If I do have one, my exterior is now reflecting that soul.  In other words, everything about me is heavy.

Well, shit, Stephen Bishop, this post took a dark turn fairly quickly, didn’t it?  I totally didn’t mean for it to, because I really do love this song so much.  It represents perfectly what it is I loved (and still love) about recording music off the radio.  I like pretty much everything that I’m lucky enough to capture, but every once in awhile, there’s that song that you discover that you just fall head over heels in love with, and it ends up being the only time you ever hear it being played on the airwaves, so if there’s anyone doubting your sanity when it comes to what you do with your free time, you can point to the song and say “See!!!  See!!!  This what it’s all about, haters!!!”

Actually, doing that might not stop the doubts about your sanity, Stephen Bishop, and as far as I know, I don’t have any haters who are hatin’ on me because of this blog.  So maybe just ignore that last paragraph.  If anything, once each person presses the “Play” button below, they will instantly understand what it means to love recording music off the radio.  So thanks for your endorsement, Stephen Bishop.  I think you can guess how that makes me feel. . .
