Oh, Phil Collins, there were a lot of girls from songs that I wanted to meet for various reasons. Some just sounded beautiful, some sounded. . .amorous. . .if you know what I’m saying, but Sussudio sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before. She sounded so exotic. She could have been from anywhere. Was she the love child of some hippie couple? Maybe a beautiful model with a British accent? A Moroccan princess you bumped into at some fancy record studio shindig? I don’t know Phil Collins, but she clearly had a hold on you, and so she had to be as interesting and unique as her name. Where I came from, there wasn’t a girl with such an exotic-sounding name that I was aware of, and most of their middle names were Marie. It would be years before I heard a name that was anything other than Anglo-Saxon in origin. Well, other than one of my first celebrity crushes Marina Sirtis, that is, and let’s face it, she was unobtainable. Not that the girls that I met later in life were any less so. . .
