Radio 51, side B, track 7: “The Look” by Roxette, #76 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

RoxetteOh, Roxette. . .

No judgment here.  And no disrespect meant.  But you guys made it on to the Top 90 of the ’80s?  Please don’t misunderstand me, Roxette.  I love your music.  I really do.  But there was a LOT of music that came out in the ’80s, and we’ve only got 90 spots to fill.  I just don’t know if “The Look” is on anybody’s list when we talk about the top 90 songs of the whole decade.  I’m not saying it wouldn’t warrant being featured on a retrospective of some of the great music that came from the decade of my childhood, but this song beat out songs by Madonna and Bon Jovi?  I don’t know, dudes.  This seems questionable to me.  I probably was really excited to hear this the night I recorded it off the radio, since I’d been on the ground floor when this song debuted, but having the benefit of a few more decades since then, and being more cognizant of the sounds that were produced in the ’80s, I don’t know that this song would make my cut of the best songs of the ’80s.  If we were ranking them, I mean.  Because this was and is a great song. . .

Ya know what, Roxette, don’t even listen to me.  Congrats on making the cut.

“The Look”

<awesome Roxette jam>

Walkin’ like a man
Hitting like a hammer, she’s a juvenile scam
Never was a quitter
Tasted like a raindrop
She’s got the look

Heavenly bound
‘Cause heaven’s got her number when she’s spinnin’ me around
Kissin’ is a color
Her lovin’ is a wild dog
She’s got the look

She’s got the look
(She’s got the look)
She’s got the look
(She’s got the look)
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue

When everything I’ll ever do I do for you

And I go la la la la la
She’s got the look

Fire in the eyes
Naked to the T-bone is a lover’s disguise
Bangin’ on the head drum, shakin’ like a mad bull
She’s got the look

Mmm, swayin’ to the band
Movin’ like a hammer, she’s a miracle, man
Lovin’ is the ocean
Kissin’ is the wet sand
She’s got the look

She’s got the look
(She’s got the look)
She’s got the look
(She’s got the look)
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue

When everything I’ll ever do I do for you

And I go la la la la la
She’s got the look

Ow!
